How to choose a longevity drink.

Most "best longevity drink" lists rank brands by ingredient lists and price. Here are the questions they skip: is each dose close to what was studied, is it still there at the expiry date, and what does it add to what you already take?

The short answer

Check six things: (1) every active listed with its dose in mg, no "proprietary blend"; (2) each dose compared with the doses used in human studies; (3) whether the label amount is guaranteed to the expiry date, and how fragile actives are protected; (4) sugar, sweetener and caffeine; (5) the real cost per day; (6) overlap with vitamins you already take, and a doctor's check if you're pregnant, on medication or managing a condition. No drink or supplement has been shown to slow human aging, so judge a longevity drink as a daily nutrition habit, not a treatment.*

Is each dose close to what was studied?

Short answer: line up every active against the doses used in human studies. For more on the lead active, see ergothioneine, explained. A label can name an ingredient at a fraction of the studied amount and still list it first. Here's the Longevity Shot, ingredient by ingredient.

Longevity Shot doses vs. human studies
ActivePer shotDoses used in human studies
Ergothioneine50 mg10 or 25 mg a day for 16 weeks; up to 25 mg a day in other trials. The latest FDA GRAS notice for ergothioneine in foods and drinks assumed heavy consumers could reach about 275 mg a day.
Glutathione250 mg250 and 1,000 mg a day for 6 months (Richie et al., 2015)
PQQ20 mg20 mg a day for 12 weeks
Astaxanthin4 mg4 mg a day for 9 weeks (Ito et al., 2018); 6 and 12 mg a day for 16 weeks
Ceramides1.8 mg1.2 mg rice glucosylceramide a day for 12 weeks. Ours is rice-derived.
L-theanine50 mg200 mg a day for 4 weeks (Hidese et al., 2019). Ours is a lighter 50 mg.
Sialic acid50 mgNo published human trial of oral sialic acid at supplement doses yet; one is registered and under way. Ours is made from glucosamine-6-phosphate and acetyl-CoA, not taken from bird's nest.

Matching a studied dose doesn't mean a finished drink has been tested the same way. Compare the doses, then judge the drink on how you feel after a few months of daily use.

Freshness

Is the dose still there at the expiry date?

Short answer: ask whether the label amount is measured at manufacture or guaranteed to the expiry date. Some actives are fragile. Vitamin C and astaxanthin break down faster once they sit in liquid, warmth and light, so a premixed drink can lose part of what's on the label before you open it.

The Longevity Shot keeps every active dry in the Twist-to-Mix cap until you twist, so they meet the liquid seconds before you drink. Every amount on the label is guaranteed through the full 24-month shelf life.

Absorption

Is glutathione absorbed when you drink it?

Short answer: the evidence is mixed but improving. Early single-dose studies found little change in blood glutathione. A 6-month randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 54 adults (Richie et al., European Journal of Nutrition, 2015) found that 250 and 1,000 mg a day both raised glutathione in blood, with the bigger rise at 1,000 mg. It was small and funded by an ingredient maker, so treat it as a promising start.*

Side by side

Shot, powder, capsules or a "longevity shot" injection?

Short answer: pick the format you'll actually take every day. Longevity research runs in months, so consistency matters more than a long ingredient list.

On the label

How much sugar, sweetener and caffeine?

Short answer: check all three. Many wellness shots are juice-based and carry real sugar; some add caffeine without leading with it. The Longevity Shot has 0 g sugar, 3 g allulose (a rare sugar that doesn't count toward total sugars on US labels), no stevia and no caffeine. Large amounts of allulose can cause bloating in some people; one shot has 3 g.

Add it up

Already taking a multivitamin or vitamin D?

Short answer: add up the vitamins across everything you take. The Longevity Shot has six vitamins at 100% of the Daily Value, including 20 µg (800 IU) of vitamin D3. The US upper limit for adults is 100 µg (4,000 IU) of vitamin D a day from all sources, so one shot plus a typical multivitamin stays well below it, but high-dose vitamin D products can push you over.

Expectations

How long before you notice anything?

Short answer: the human studies behind these ingredients ran 9 weeks to 6 months. Give any longevity drink at least that long, take it daily, and judge it on things you can track: sleep, energy, skin, or a blood test your doctor already runs. Be wary of anything that promises results in days.

Who it's for

Who should check with a doctor first?

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Taking prescription medication, or managing a health condition.
  • Buying for a child or teen: ask your pediatrician first.
  • Already taking several supplements with overlapping actives.
FAQ

Choosing a longevity drink: questions.

What should I look for in a longevity drink?

Every active listed with its dose, doses close to those used in human studies, amounts guaranteed to the expiry date, clear sugar and caffeine content, a cost per day you can work out, and claims that describe the research as it stands.

Is a longevity shot an injection?

Some clinics use "longevity shot" for NAD+ injections. The Boundless Longevity Shot is a 25 mL drink you twist, shake and sip.

How much ergothioneine is in the Longevity Shot?

50 mg per shot. Human trials have used up to 25 mg a day, and the latest FDA GRAS notice assumed heavy consumers could reach about 275 mg a day. The average American diet is estimated to provide about 1.1 mg a day, mostly from mushrooms.

Does oral glutathione work?

Early single-dose studies found little change in blood levels. A 6-month randomized trial in 54 adults found that 250 and 1,000 mg a day raised blood glutathione. The Longevity Shot has 250 mg.

Why does the Longevity Shot keep its powder in the cap?

Vitamin C and astaxanthin break down faster once they sit in liquid. Keeping them dry in the Twist-to-Mix cap means they meet the drink seconds before you drink it.

How much does a longevity drink cost per month?

Longevity powder mixes typically cost about US$99 to $183 a month. The Longevity Shot is US$4.99 a shot at the US launch, about US$150 for 30 days.

Does the Longevity Shot have sugar or caffeine?

No sugar and no caffeine. It's sweetened with 3 g allulose and has no stevia.

Can I take the Longevity Shot with a multivitamin?

Add up the vitamins first. One shot has 100% of the Daily Value of six vitamins, including 800 IU of vitamin D3. The adult upper limit for vitamin D is 4,000 IU a day from all sources. If you take medication or high-dose supplements, check with your doctor.

How long should I take a longevity drink before judging it?

The human studies behind these ingredients ran from 9 weeks to 6 months, so give it at least a few months of daily use.
